In the United States Air Force, a wing is a larger unit that is normally subordinate to a Numbered Air Force. Most USAF wings are commanded by a Colonel, but some are commanded by Brigadier Generals. USAF wings structured to fulfill a mission from a specific base, and contain a headquarters and four groups: an operations group, a maintenance group, a medical group and a mission support group. Such a wing is referred to as a Combat Wing Organization. The 163d Reconnaissance Wing is comprised of the following Groups.
tabHeadquarters 
The 163d Reconnaissance Wing Headquarters is comprised of the Command Section, Chaplain, Financial Management, Judge Advocate, Public Affairs, Military Equal Opportunity, Human Resource Advisor, Wing Inspector General, Wing Safety and Wing Plans. Each unique section provides products and services for the benefit of the entire Wing to assure the mission is being accomplished in an effective and efficient manner.
tabMaintenance Group 
The primary mission of the 163d Maintenance Group is to provide 24/7 aircraft maintenance support of reconnaissance and flight training operations.
tabMedical Group 
The 163d Medical Group's primary mission is to provide bio environmental, public health, and medical support to monitor the health and wellness of the members of the 163d Reconnaissance Wing. Ensuring our members are fit-to-fight makes our wing a valuable and viable asset to the California Air National Guard which integrates seamlessly with Expeditionary and Joint Forces.
tabFormal Training Unit 
The Flying Training Unit's mission is to provide fully trained pilots and sensor operations to the unmanned aerial reconnaissance operations.
tabMission Support Group 
The 163d Mission Support Group is the main support function for over 900 military personnel. The Mission Support Group consists of Security Forces Squadron, Civil Engineering Squadron, Logistics Readiness Squadron, Communications Flight, Mission Support Flight, Services Flight and the Base Contracting Office.
tabOperations Group 
The 163d Operations Group is home to the 196th Reconnaissance Squadron and the 210th Weather Flight. All directly support the reconnaissance mission by flying mission operations 24/7.
tab196th Reconnaissance Squadron 
The 196th Reconnaissance Squadron's primary mission is to support the war on terrorism by providing reconnaissance, flying the MQ-1 Predator, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
tabField Training Detachment 
The Field Training Detachment provides hands-on maintenance training to Predator aircraft and communication maintenance personnel.
